J.T. Barrett to officers during DUI arrest: Im the quarterback of Ohio State

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett was arrested Oct. 31 for driving while impaired. If that wasn’t bad enough for the Buckeyes’ starter, Barrett was heard trying to play the celebrity card with Ohio police officers in a video released by TMZ Sports Thursday.

“I’m the quarterback of Ohio State,” Barrett tells them. “There’s nothing you can do?”

“My intention is to not take you to jail,” the officer replies. “That’s about the best I’m going to do for you tonight.”

Barrett seemingly passes the sobriety test that requires him to walk in a straight line, but the college QB reportedly blew a 0.099 into a breathalyzer that night. The legal limit for citizens over 21 is .08, but Barrett, a redshirt sophomore at Ohio State, is just 20.

The quarterback was at home hanging out with friends when a “heavily intoxicated” buddy stopped by his place, according to the Associated Press. Barrett felt the need to drive him home, said Barrett’s attorney, Phil Templeton.

In the video, Barrett goes back and forth with the officer:

Officer: “How much have you had to drink tonight?”
Barrett: “Haven’t.”
Officer: “Haven’t? So what I smell is not alcohol coming off your breath?”
Barrett: (shakes head)

Unfortunately for Barrett, it was alcohol. Barrett pleaded guilty Tuesday to driving under the influence. He faces a $400 fine and had his license suspended for six months. He must also complete a three-day driver-intervention program by Feb. 13.

“I’m just truly sorry,” Barrett said at the hearing.

Barrett is still slated to start Saturday’s game against Illinois, though it’s contingent on if he has a good week of practice, Urban Meyer said earlier this week. If he doesn’t, Cardale Jones, who picked up Barrett and drove him home following his arrest, will again have to have his teammate’s back.
